  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Terence John Santry was born on 19 December 1910 in Pyrmont, New South Wales. He studied at the Royal Art Society and at East Sydney Technical College and went on to work as a commercial artist for Paramount Pictures. In 1933, he married Marie G. Byrnes, with whom he had two children. Between 1937 and 1939, he studied at the Westminster School in London and, upon returning to Australia, worked at various Sydney newspapers as an illustrator and cartoonist. He then began teaching at East Sydney Technical College, and later at the University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales. In the late 1940s, he and several other Sydney artists formed the Norwood Group and Santry's works were finally exhibited in Sydney in 1984 and Melbourne in 1985. He died on 6 October 1990 in Sydney.

  • Scope and Content
    20 drawings made in watercolour, crayon and ink. Subjects are mostly nudes and life drawings of men and women. 1 finished watercolour titled "Rough Sketch ; The Mudlark" and 1 watercolour of a city/harbour view with a ship. 1 coloured crayon of a woman and child.

    21 prints and reproductions used in advertisements, newspaper articles and a Christmas card for Taubmans paints. Subjects and events include WWII soldiers; Qantas; Maurice Abravanel Sydney Orchestral Society concerts, 1946; cover art for the Treasure Chest of Dances; Treasure Chest of Stephen Foster Songs; art for The Australian Women's Weekly, 1942 and 1943. Some duplicates.
