  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Robert Douglas Caldwell, a jackeroo of Burwood, Sydney enlisted 19 Feb. 1917 aged 19 and served with the 2nd Battalion, 25th Reinforcement. He embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board H.M.A.T. A20 Hororata, 14 June 1917 and returned to Australia Jan. 1919
  • Scope and Content
    Portrait of Robert Caldwell in army uniform, below image is his battalion colour patch.

    On reverse is a print of Gallipoli Harbour, with ships anchored. "Barbed wire on jagged metal poles laid by the Turks all along the cliff tops".

    Circular brass badge surmounted by a King's crown. In the centre is the AIF rising sun emblem surrounded by the text 'ISSUED BY DEPT. OF DEFENCE RETURNED FROM ACTIVE SERVICE'. The reverse has been impressed with "R. D. Caldwell, York Street, Epping ... 89496". This badge was issued to all soldiers and nurses who returned to Australia from active service and were discharged. Accompanied with 2 coloured ribbons.
