The fisheries trade had difficulty in keeping ova alive under artificial conditions en route to Tasmania. Youl experimented with placing the live ova packed in moss in the ship's ice-house. Travelling on the 'Norfolk' after 91 days in 1864, the first successful delivery of living ova was made to the River Plenty in Tasmania.
