  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Otto Weiss, born in Vienna in 1898, professional engineer, manager of the welding division of Elin A. G. Austria. Weiss visited Australia in 1935 and in cooperation with Charles M. Terry Pty Ltd, Sydney, visited the main industrial users in Australia and New Zealand, and established Elin arc welding equipment. Otto Weiss immigrated to Sydney with his family in 1938 and became the Elin resident engineer with Charles M. Terry, travelling extensively advising and selling Elin generators to industry and Government. During the World War II, Weiss developed the Australian manufacture of a crossfield generator at Jones & Rickard Pty. Ltd., Redern, for the Australian armed services and essential industry. He subsequently designed a variety of AC and DC generators built by J & R Oliver Electric and other local manufacturers. Otto Weiss was a corporate member of The Institution of Engineers, Australia, and was a significant contributor to the development of the electrical engineering industry in Australia. He died in 1946.
