  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Clement N. Govett served with the British Commonwealth Occupation Forces in Japan after World War II. He served later in Korea during the Korean War and returned to Japan in 1951.

    Box 1/Folder 1
    Gippsland - taken on a tour, by car, to Lakes Entrance, the Royal Cave, Yallourn open cut and Warragul, 1937.
    Hamilton, Portland, Geelong, Camperdown - the clock tower at Camperdown has been pulled down, the street scene in Geelong shows the lack of traffic, centre pole tram line, the very old buildings and now extinct sewerage pole, 1936.
    Ballarat - the Avenue of Honor was considered a 'showpiece'.
    Impressment of motor cycles during World War 2 - teams of Army personnel were sent to country ares early in 1942 to impress the cycles from local residents.
    Spirit of Progress - this famous all steel, air-conditioned, train was constructed at the Newport workshops of the Victorian Railways. It ran non-stop between Melbourne and Albury as part of the Sydney Express. Commenced running November 1937.
    Victorian centenary - the first 100 years was celebrated with many city decorations, a visit by Duke of Gloucester, Grenadier Guards Band and other events. London to Melbourne air race was a feature, 1934.
    Rugby Union football - was played on the open fields of Middle Park for many years.
    Baseball- team of the visiting USS Augusta, 1938.
    M.C.G. - large crowd in the Members' reserve just after the new pavilion was constructed, 1928.
    Cricket - MCC Club XI playing Old Wesley Collegians at Wesley College, 1934.
    Rowing - Melbourne Grammar School training in 1931, finish of King's Cup on Lower Yarra in 1937 and Henley on the Yarra..
    Mount Macedon - the Memorial Cross - a very popular place to visit before the war.

    Port Melbourne - HMS Hood and HMS Repulse alongside Prince's Pier. In 1924 the British fleet visited Australia with a flotilla of warships. Large crowds were attracted to see ships. On the days these pictures were taken no visitors were allowed to go aboard. The Hood was sunk by the German Navy in the North Sea in 1941 and the Repulse by the Japanese in 1942.
    Mariposa and Monterey - these great white liners were operated by the Matson Line (USA) and sailed regularly between California and Australia. The ships were very popular for travellers and continued running until USA entered the war in December 1941.
    U.S.A. Augusta - an American warship visited Melbourne in 1934. The ship was involved in the Pacific War against Japan.
    Empress of Britain - this 40,000 ton vessel was in Melbourne on a world cruise in March 1938. It was the largest vessel ever to enter Port Philip Bay and six tugs were required to handle the berthing. All other shipping was cancelled for the day. Large crowds visited Port Melbourne all day to see the liner.
    Essendon Aerodrome - for many years this was Melbourne's main airport. Pictures show planes of the original Australian National Airways. The Monana was a small DH 56 that crashed and killed five people on a trip to Adelaide.
    Cutty Sark - a small seaplane which often carried passengers on joy flights from St Kilda Beach. During the Depression very few could afford the flight which cost 10/-.
    Melbourne floods - very heavy rains in November 1934 caused much damage. The Yarra rose to great eights and Heyington and Kooyong tennis courts were under water.
    Veteran car rally - many old cars of the day at St Kilda Beach.
    Malmsbury Railway Bridge - on the Bendigo line. This is considered one of the finest bridges in Victoria. It is built of the bluestone found in the local area.
    St Helena - not far from Melbourne. Shows the Anglican church which was later destroyed by fire.
