  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

William Anthony Joshua (Tony) Maston was born 30 April 1911 in Coffs Harbour. His parents owned a small farm "Otley" at Karangi, where he lived until moving to Sydney in the mid-1920's to complete senior schooling at Parramatta High School, living in Merrylands. He was given a camera for Leaving Certificate results and his interest led to his profession as a portrait photographer. Maston also wrote illustrated articles for the Sydney Mail until 1938. In the late 1940's he was a regular contributor to the Sydney Morning Herald Country Edition. Many of his railway photographs have been published in books and magazines. He travelled widely in New South Wales, first by bike but then by motorcycle after 1945. He retired from portrait photography in 1975. His many landscapes are perhaps inspired by his Christian faith and he attended St Mark's Anglican Church, Merrylands, where his funeral was held in 2006.
