  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Harry Cantwell was a member of the 3rd Infantry Battalion, Australian Imperial Force. He fought at Gallipoli where he received a gunshot wound in the left shoulder and later on the Western Front where he received a gunshot wound in the right thigh. He rose to the rank of corporal and was discharged as medically unfit in 1917. In later life he worked as a journalist on the Sydney "Sun".

    One photograph and one postcard album, 1926-1927, recording a trip by Harry Cantwell and his wife Bill to the United Kingdom via Colombo, Egypt, Naples and Toulon and return via Paris, Berlin,Warsaw, Moscow, Siberia, China, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong and Manilla.

    Item 1. Two colour patches for the 3rd Battalion, 1st Australian Infantry Brigade. Pinned to each patch is small brass badge in the form of the letter "A" for ANZAC denoting that the wearer had taken part in the 1915 Gallipoli campaign.

    Item 2. One set of corporal's stripes.

    Item 3. Three World War I medals with ribbons attached:
    1. 1914-1915 Star, bronze with red, white & blue ribbon.
    2. British War Medal, silver with rainbow ribbon.
    3. Victory Medal, brass with blue, white & orange ribbon.

    Item 4. Princess Mary Christmas Box, 1914 being an embossed brass box containing:
    1. a greeting card from Princess Mary and
    2. a brass .303 cartridge casing with copper primer, monogrammed "M" beneath a crown, with a sterling silver bullet tip holding a pencil.

    Item 5. Two pieces of shrapnel.

    Item 6. Two badges:
    a. Returned from Active Service Badge, ca. 1920. Circular brass badge surmounted by a King's crown. The reverse is impressed with the serial number 12778.
    b. Returned Sailors and Soldiers Imperial League membership badge, 1919. Shield shaped brass and enamel badge surmounted by a King's crown. The reverse is impressed with the serial number 19805.

    Item 7. Anzac Commemorative Medallion, 1967 in presentation box accompanied by a 'with compliments' note from the Australian Government. Circular bronze medal surmounted by a King's crown. Awarded to surviving members of the Australian forces who served on the Gallipoli Peninsula during the period from the first Anzac Day in April 1915 to the date of final evacuation in January 1916.
