  • Scope and Content
This collection documents Michael Wilding’s academic and literary careers, and his prolific output of fiction and non-fiction. Included is correspondence with family and friends, academics, editors, writers, literary agents and publishers; manuscripts of published and unpublished novels, short stories, essays and critical studies; lecture and research materials on Australian and English literature; and clippings of reviews of his books.

The following information was drawn from notes about the collection provided by Michael Wilding:

Political Fictions (London, 1980, Sydney, (1984) was originally a longer manuscript than the published version. The omitted chapters were then collected as Social Visions (1993). Some manuscript versions include essays on Australian literature later published as Studies in Classic Australian Fiction (1997). The Oxford Book of Australian Short Stories (1994) exists in two distinct versions. Originally it was commissioned as an anthology of Modern Australian Short Stories. Later it became an anthology from the 1870s onwards. Some of the material from the original Modern Stories was published in the anthology Air Mail from Down Under (1990), a collection of Australian stories translated into German. This is For You (1994) was originally titled Real Fiction. Under Saturn (1988) was originally titled Broken Monuments of Great Desires, and Post-Industrial Yarns. The Paraguayan Experiment (1984) includes draft versions and extensive research material. Also included are manuscripts of Wildest Dreams (1998), whose working title was The Literary Pages. Raising Spirits, Making Gold and Swapping Wives : The True Adventures of Dr. John Dee and Sir Edward Kelly, published in 1999, is a documentary based on 16th century records that has undergone a number of versions, supplemented by source materials.
