  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    T. J. Bown & Co. was a manufactory in Sydney established by Thomas Bown in ca. 1844. The company produced plumbers and gasfitters’ supplies, fire-extinguishing equipment, brass finishing and engineering work. They were also importers of chandeliers and gas stoves.

    The factory is noted as being at various locations throughout Sydney including 284 and 614 George Street, and 101 & 107 Bathurst Street.

    Thomas Bown was a member of the Loyal Orange Insitution of N.S.W.

    Material left in attic at 34 Duxford Street, Paddington. Thought to be left by Thomas Bown who may have resided there.

    Badges, weights and copper plates located at R 2093

    Badges
    i) Metal badge inscribed with 'King William III 1690'. Depicts the king wearing armour and holding a sword whilst sitting on a reared horse. Maker mark is 'G. Fenning'
    ii) In star shape, with an emblem in the middle depicting a man on a reared horse. Maker mark is 'G. Fenning'

    Weights
    Two scale weights in cylindrical shape with handle on top. Measured in troy ounces, one as VIII and the other as XVI.

    Copper plates
    Two copper plates inscribed with "T. J. Bown & Co." and information about the company featuring illustrations of a fire engine, gas stove, etc.

    i) Three individual portraits of two unidentified women and a boy.
    ii) One photograph of three girls and one woman standing outside "366 Riley Street. Taken ... 2nd June 1891"
