  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

George Shedden Dunbar, First Lieutenant of the Royal Marines, died at Woolwich, Kent on December 6, 1850.

This portrait of Dunbar was published in Heads of the People: an Illustrated Journal of Literature, Whims, and Oddities in August 1847. The description accompanying his portrait reads:

    The Royal Marine
In addition to our head of the 'Poet.' we present our readers with a portrait of a distinguished individual, George Shedden Dunbar, Esquire, Lieutenant of Royal Marines, who arrived among us about three weeks since, and is about to proceed to Port Essington to take charge of the detachment there.
He will be accompanied by Surgeon Crawford, one corporal, five privates, two women, and one child.
They will leave Sydney this day for their destination, in the brig "Freak", under the command of Captain Simpson.
Mr. Dunbar is the third son of the late Post-Captain Sir James Dunbar, Bart., of Boath, in the County of Nairn, Scotland.
He joined Her Majesty's service in the year 1842, as second Lieutenant in the Marines, and on the 1st of March last, was ordered to proceed to Port Essington.
We regret the hast departure of this gentleman, who is totally free from that pride and assumed superiority which too frequently characterize the officers of the army. In fine, Lieutenant Dunbar is a "fine fellow!".
Had our space permitted it, we should have given a short account of the important settlement to which Lieutenant Dunbar is proceeding, (having been kindly furnished by Captain Stanley of the "Rattlesnake" with some interesting data thereon); but we are compelled to defer our intention till a future opportunity.
