  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    The Mitchell Wing opened in 1910; the Dixson Wing opened in 1929; the central section (including main Reading Room) and south east wing opened in 1942; extensions to the south east wing completed in 1962.
  • Scope and Content
    SERIES 01
    ARCHITECTURAL DRAWINGS
    The architectural drawings in the collection are primarily those for the State Library of NSW by various Government Architects from 1905-2000, principal architects featured being Vernon, McRae, Blair, Smith, Cobden Parkes, Weatherburn & Farmer. The Library was built in several stages and the plans are arranged chronologically.

    The photographs date from ca. 1885-1978 and include photographs of various stages of construction of the Library and areas within the Library, for example the reading room, maps section, microfilms section etc.

    Series 02 Part 04:
    Plaster cast of the woodchopper, Musgrave Ranges, ca. 1940 / by Frank Lynch.
    [Designed for the bronze doors at the Mitchell Wing entrance. The design was not used]

    Note a series of 42 photographs, primarily of artworks held by the Library, were transferred from this collection to the Self Indexing Files (Mitchell Library Reading Room) in 1987. A listing of these photographs is available in the Pictures Source File at Pic.Acc.5459
