  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Edith B. Spark (b. 1845) and Stanley H. Spark (b. 1846) were the fourth and fifth children of Alexander Brodie Spark (1792-1856) and Frances Maria Spark (b. 1810), formerly Mrs Radford. Mrs Radford had three children from her first marriage: Alicia Maria (b. 1829); Robert (b. 1833); and Henry (b. 1836). Alexander and Frances Maria’s children were Alick (Alexander B.) (b. 1841); Frances Maria Ann (b. 1842); Mary Gordon (b. 1843); Edith B.; Stanley H.; and Florence Sophia (b. 1850).

    Alexander Brodie Spark was a significant figure in the early colony of New South Wales. Arriving in Sydney in 1823 he established himself as a merchant, shipping agent, land agent, and landowner. He was a Justice of the Peace, Managing Director of the Bank of New South Wales, and the first Treasurer of the Australian Gaslight Company. He was also an art collector and patron of the arts.
