Notes on an investigation into the provenance of this painting and the identity of the sitter, made following a suggestion that the portrait may have been by Earle, are filed at PXn 17, as also some extracts from a ML file of correspondence with the Stewart family 1952 (ML52/74) concerning known portraits of Colonel William Stewart.

No conclusion could be reached as to either the provenance of the portrait or the identity of the sitter.

Faded ink inscription on back lower right hand corner 'Malta 1822'. Printed framer's label 'M. Jenkins...No.13, Strand...' centre back. Above it in pencil 'Stewart/Colonel of Buffs/Acting Lt. Governor N.S.W.' and below label in same hand, also in pencil 'Malta 1822'. To this has been added in former library officer's hand (Mr. Hugh Wright?) across top left hand '?Col Wall' and in the same hand between inscription above label 'arrived at Sydney, April 29, 1825'.
