W. Stirling.

It has been suggested that this could be the work of Thomas Phillips, or of William Beechey. In his 'Land Looking West', London, 1948, Malcolm Uren states that Stirling's portrait was painted by Beechey during his 1832-1834 visit.

It seems probable that the portrait was done in England.
  • Date note

Undated. The back of the canvas is stamped 'G. Rowney & Co, 51 Rathbone Place'. This company was at that address ca. 1833, and later at 52 Rathbone Place. Stirling was in England from late 1832 to June 1834 - in 1833 he was knighted and was presented with the coffee pot (shown in the portrait) in May 1833.
