Sydney Citizens Against The Proposed Monorail (S.C.A.P.M.) was formed in December 1985 to oppose the building of an elevated railway through the streets of Sydney. The Minister for Public Works, Mr. Laurie Brereton had announced on 28 October 1985 that TNT had been awarded the contract to build the monorail. S.C.A.P.M. appealed to the public in newspaper advertisements to support its stand and held protest meetings and demonstrations through the streets of Sydney during 1986. The organisation made submissions to public inquiries held to determine the course of the elevated track; its solicitor was Mr. Michael Hobbs. The monorail opened to the public in July 1988.
