    Elena Kats-Chernin (1957- ) was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan (former USSR). She received her musical training in Yaroslavi and Moscow before emigrating to Australia in 1975. She studied composition with Richard Toop at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, graduating in 1980, and then studied with Heimut Lachenmann in Hanover, Germany. After a decade in Europe, Kats-Chernin returned to live in Sydney in 1994. She has composed in nearly every genre, from orchestral compositions to chamber, choral, ensemble and stage works. Her music featured at the opening ceremonies of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and the 2003 Rugby World Cup. Kats-Chernin is also a pianist, and the piano figures prominently in her output.
