  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Gladys Sandford enlisted with the NZ Expeditionary Force in 1915 and worked as a nurse in Egypt before being attached to the New Zealand Hospital at Hornchurch while in the Mechanical Transport Corps. She worked as an ambulance driver and was placed on the strength of the N.Z. Army Service Corps, serving in Egypt, France and England. After being demobilised she became a car salesperson and set out on a long motor tour around Australia. She was the first woman in New Zealand to enlist in an aviation course and the only woman eligible for membership in the NZ Returned Soldiers Association.
