These papers relate mainly to Edmund Lockyer and his son, Sir Nicholas Colston Lockyer.

Edmund Lockyer arrived in New South Wales in 1825 as an army officer and was immediately instructed to explore the Brisbane River. The next year he established a settlement in King George Sound in order to forestall the French. In 1827 he left the army and settled on his estate, Lockyersleigh, at Marulan. He also had a house at Ryde. He served as a Magistrate and later as sergeant at arms to the Legislative Council. He died in 1860.

Sir Nicholas Colston Lockyer had a distinguished career in the public service starting as a cadet at age 13 in 1868. In 1886 he was appointed accountant to the New South Wales Treasury and was responsible for reorganisation of the Taxation Department. In 1896 he was appointed to the combined positions of Collector of Customs and first Commissioner of Taxation. After Federation he transferred to the Commonwealth Public Service where he became Head of the Customs Service in 1911.
