Edward Arthur Brownfield, 1853-1939, a potter’s son, grew up in Staffordshire, England and joined the family firm, Brownfield Pottery. He arrived in Sydney, NSW in 1903, and leased the unused buildings and plant of the Lithgow Valley Colliery Company’s defunct pottery enterprise. He used local materials and mechanised the craft based industry. The Australasian Brownfield's Pottery closed in 1907. He shared his experience with students, including George Rayner Hoff at East Sydney Technical College from 1925. His notebooks provided research material for Ian Evans’ book, The Lithgow Pottery : The Flannel Flower Press, Sydney, 1981.
