Rev. Orton was a Methodist missionary who was appointed as a probationer to Jamaica, 1826-1829, and as Chairman of the New South Wales district, 1831. His work took him to Tasmania, South Australia, Victoria, N.S.W. and New Zealand. He conducted the first organised Christian service at Port Phillip, 24 Apr. 1836 and promoted a Wesleyan mission to the aborigines. - Scope and ContentLetters are mainly of a personal nature and refer only briefly to his missionary work. They were written to his wife from various parts of New South Wales, New Zealand and Jamaica and include a letter diary of a voyage to New Zealand on the Superb, 15 Jan. 1840
