The Gays Counselling Service of New South Wales grew out of a parent organisation, Campaign Against Moral Persecution (CAMP) which was founded in 1970. It published the first openly homosexual journal CAMP Ink and attracted 2000 members in its foundation year. In 1973 a special interest group started 'Phone-A-Friend' to broaden the outreach of those interested in helping and befriending others coming out or in other ways suffering from the isolation of their homosexuality. Political action included demonstrations, submissions to government departments, and writing letters of protest. In 1976 CAMP NSW was formally incorporated under the Companies Act and in 1978 it was registered as a charity. In 1981 CAMP NSW changed its name to Gays Counselling Service of N.S.W. and it described itself as a government and community funded organisation supplying information, support, referrals, advocacy and networking.
