Vivienne Binns was born in Wyong, N.S.W. in 1940. She trained at the National Art School, East Sydney Technical College, 1958-1962. Her first solo exhibition was in 1967 at the Watters Gallery, where she has since exhibited many times in various media, including performance and installation works. In the early 1970s she formed Vivienne Binns Enamelling, teaching classes at her studio and accepting commercial commissions for decorative wall panels. She exhibited enamel works, Funky Ashtrays, in 1971 at the Watters gallery. She was an original and prominent member of the Women's Art Movement; and has worked extensively as an artist in the community, one of her participation projects being the significant Mothers' Memories Others' Memories; she was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for service to art and craft in 1983 and in 1986 the Ros Bower Memorial Award for visionary contribution to Community Arts. Binns edited the first book of critical and theoretical essays on Australian community arts, Community and the arts, history, theory, practice: Australian perspectives (Pluto Press, 1991). She was awarded an Australian Creative Fellowship in 1990. Her work is represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of N.S.W., the Art Gallery of Queensland, the Art Gallery of Western Australia and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Brisbane. - Access Conditions
