    Peppin Crest

    To all and singular

    To whom these presents shall ?? Stephen Martin Leak Esq Garter Principal King of Arms and Charles Townley Esq Clarineaux of the South East and West part of England from the River Treat southwards send greetings.

    Whereas those and badges and ensigns of gentility commonly called or known by the name of arms have to fore been and still are continued to be conferred upon deserving persons to distinguish them from the common sort of people and whereas Humfrey Sydenham of Combe in Dulverton in the county of Somerset Esq son of Humfrey Sydenham Esq by Elizabeth his wife daughter of George Peppin of Dulverton.

    The foresaid gent hath represented unto the right honourable Thomas Earl of Effingham Deputy with his Royal approbation to the most noble Edward Duke of Norfolk Earl Marshall and Hereditary Marshall of England.

    The afforsaid George Peppin was doubtful of his just right to arms and he being unwilling to use any in memory of his ******* Mother without unquestionable authority hath therefore prayed his Lordships and warrants for granting and assigning such arms as he may lawfully use in memory of his said mother and that the same together with a suitable crest may be borne and used by descendents of John Peppin his mother’s brother and whereas his Lordships considering the promised did by this warrant the Fourth day of this instant July order and direct us to grant and assign unto the said Humfrey Sydenham such arms as he may lawfully bear and use in memory of his said mother and also grant the said arms with a suitable crest unto John Peppin his mother’s brother and his descendents.

    Now know ye that not the said Garter and Clarineaux in pursuance of the consent of the said Earl of Effingham and by virtue of the letters patent of our several officers to each of us respectively granted under the great seal of Great Britain have assigned and do by these presents grant and assign the arms following viz: vert a cross avelane argent and for the crest on a wreath of the colours a Pegasus argent charged on the shoulder with a like cross vert (as the same art in the margin here of more plainly depicted) The said arms to be borne and used forever hereafter by the said Humfrey Sydenham in memory of his said mother Elizabeth Peppin and together with the crest by John Peppin his mother’s brother and his descendents with their due and proper differensed according to the ancient usage and custom of arms without the let or interruption of any person or persons whatsoever.

    In witness whereof the said Garter and Claineaux and King of Arms have to these presents subscribed our name and affixed the seal of our several offices this thirtieth day of July in the thirty fist year of the reign of our sovereign lord George the second by the grace of god King of Great Britain France and Ireland Defender of the Faith and in the year of our lord God One thousand seven hundred and fifty seven.
