Hayes Gordon founded the Ensemble Acting Studio as a school in 1956 in Sydney's North Shore. In January 2012 the school closed due to poor enrollment numbers and rising costs. The Ensemble Theatre was affiliated with the school.

The school operated under several names including the Studios Repertory Theatre and The Rep Theatre. Graduates of the Acting Studio performed in The REP Theatre Company.
