  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Hippolyte Felix Delarue was born in France ca. 1829 and came to Sydney, N.S.W., ca. 1852, where he established a clock and jewellery business. In 1855 he married Lydia Knight. Two of their three sons, Leopold Hippolyte and Emile entered the business, while Valentine Albert Victor became an architect. Leopold married Matilda Kate Brown in 1879 and they had two daughters, Lydia Victorine and Eugenie Louise.

The business prospered during the lifetime of Hippolyte Felix Delarue but after his death at the age of 59 in 1881 a slow decline began and trading ceased altogether about 1908.

Mrs Eugenie Crawford has recorded the adventures of her grandmother and her two daughters in two books: A bunyip close behind me : recollections of the nineties. Hawthorn Press, Melbourne, 1972 and Ladies didn’t : recollections of an Edwardian girlhood. Penguin, Ringwood, Vic., 1984
