  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    William Halse Millett (1840-1877), born in Penzance, England, arrived in Australia on the ship 'Hollander' in 1857. He was a merchant seaman who was awarded the Albert Medal in gold for gallantry in 1867. He was killed in 1877 when the steamer 'Yarra Yarra' sank while entering the port of Newcastle, N.S.W.

    ITEM 1
    An album of brown leather, stamped with the letters "W.H.M. V.A." on the front cover, containing carte-de-visite, cabinet and photographic portraits including the Millett, A'Beckett, Murphy, and Deloitte families from Australia, Penzance and Hong Kong. It includes portraits of William Halse Millett and the actress Maude Millett.

    Inside front cover contains a copy of the citation for the Victoria Albert (VA) medal awarded to William H. Millett.

    Attached to the front page of the album - "The Antill family - traced to Doris Ruth Antill - (Millett)" (2 pages), stamped John Millett, 8 Aug. 1996.

    Page 22 contains a portrait of George Washington Robbins and Hobson's Bay Pier portable steam hoisting winch (pier donkey engine) used on the Melbourne waterfront ca. 1858-1900. Printed caption on back says "first ship discharged by steam was Queen of East, George Heely, Master, in March 1858".

    Back page and cover of album contains an invitation, menu and entree card to a luncheon at Government House, Canberra (1996), a wedding invitation (1993), and "William Halse Millett - a gallant and forgotten hero" by Brian Millett, submission to the 2009 Public Record Office Victoria History Competition (10 pages).
