  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Ludwig Leichhardt (1813-1848) was born in Prussia. After studying natural sciences in Germany and England he arrived in Sydney in 1842. In 1844 he led his first expedition to Port Essington, departing from the Darling Downs in October and reaching his destination in December 1845. He then planned to cross Australia from east to west. In December 1846 he set out with 7 others from the Darling Downs. Delayed by heavy rain and fever, they were forced to return after covering only 500 miles (805 km). In 1848 Leichhardt made another attempt to reach the west coast. He set out from the Condamine River and was last seen on 3 April 1848 at McPherson's Station, Coogoon, on the Darling Downs. After heading inland the expedition disappeared and its fate has never been solved.
  • Scope and Content
On this second journey Leichhardt intended to cross the continent from east to west, and the original title inside front cover reads 'Log of my journey from Port Stephens to Darling Downs and Swan River'. 'Darling Downs' has been crossed out and replaced by 'Peak Range', and Swan River has been crossed out. A rough sketch map with notes and inscription 'present of Mr Ramsay Commissary General' is on the inside front cover.
Leichhardt's account of the expedition includes descriptions of botanical specimens, geological formations and meteorological observations, encounters with local Aboriginals, lists of Aboriginal words and problems with illness and the supply of provisions. The account concludes with Leichhardt's arrival at Stuart Russell's station and his resolve to go to Fitzroy Downs.

    p. 24 (13th December 1846): 6 items of vocabulary which 'according to Mr Bunce' are 'in common with those of Pt Phillipp'.
    p. 28 (20th December 1846): 2 place names and 16 items of vocabulary which 'Mr Bunce has collected ... from Mr Turner the blackfellow'.
pp. 40-42 (2nd January 1847): word list - 'All these words belong to Billy belonging to Korinbaboy'.

pp.132-137: comprise a calendar, tables and notes on barometric pressures and elevation.
