• Scope and Content
  Samuel North (1791-1864) was born in Ireland. He married Susanna Campbell on 18 June 1815 in Canada, and they arrived in New South Wales in September 1826. At this time North was a member of the NSW Veteran Company, ranked Lieutenant. Retried from the military, in 1831 he was appointed temporarily for one year, to the position of Bonded Storekeeper by Governor Darling. In 1832 he became Police Magistrate for Windsor.
  
  He received several land grants including along Bells Line of Road in 1839, and in the County of Cumberland in 1842; he acquired land near Kurrajong Heights. In 1841 he set aside land which later became the site of Northfield.
  
  He served at Windsor until 1843 when he was also appointed a Trustee of the hospital at Windsor. In 1844 he was displaced from the office of Police Magistrate. He then transferred to Carcoar as Police Magistrate. In 1851 he moved to Sydney and in 1859 was appointed the first Water Police Magistrate, a position he held until his death on 4 June 1864. In August 1863, he was also Chairman of the Immigration Board.
  
  The Norths had four sons and six daughters: Frances Ann (d. 1852); Grace Amy (d. 1876); Isabella Frederica; Edward James Campbell (d. 1883); John Henry Roger; Emily Douglas (b. 1828); Eliza Mary (1830-1910); Samuel Charles Valentine (1832-1921); Henrietta Jane (1833-1918); and Joseph (b. 1836)
