The book was designed for use as a diary with each month preceded by a photograph. Privately printed for Mabel Fairfax Barr Smith, 1861-1946, and Jean Balfour St. Clare Barr Smith, 1864-1961, the daughters of Robert Barr Smith, the volume was dedicated to their mother. The sisters themselves represent the four seasons in the diary and the photographs were possibly by Captain Sweet who operated a photographic business in Adelaide at this time specialising in photographs of the town and its surroundings.
