  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    George Cann was born in Shankhouse, Northumberland, England in 1871. He arrived in Australia in 1900 and worked in various western coalfields. He was a Freemason, Alderman at Lithgow and served in the Australian Infantry Forces from 1916 until 1917, 30th Battalion, as a Sergeant. He was a member of the NSW Legislative Assembly from 1914-1927. He held various positions including the Member for Canterbury, Secretary for Mines and Minister for Labour and Industry, Minister for Local Government and Minister for Public Health. He married Catherine Roberts in 1890 and had one daughter and one son.
