Eleanor M. Hinder (1893-1963), a welfare officer and international public servant who worked in Shanghai in the 1920s and 1930s and for the United Nations, was born at East Maitland, N.S.W., the third daughter of Robert John Hinder (1856-1918), headmaster, and his wife Sarah Florence, née Mills. Her father was the brother of Henry Vincent Critchley Hinder (1865-1913).

The artist Frank Hinder (1906-1992) was born in 1906, the son of H.V.C. Hinder. Eleanor M. Hinder and Frank Hinder were cousins.
