  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Arthur Orton was an impostor who replied to an advertisement in Australian newspapers in August 1865 'asking for information about the fate of Roger Charles Tichborne, heir to a baronetcy and to the estates of a Hampshire family.' The mother of the missing man, Lady Tichborne was convinced he was still alive. Orton convinced a solicitor in Wagga Wagga that he was the missing man despite the fact that he was stout and the heir had been slim and from there he sailed to England, was accepted by Lady Tichborne and received an allowance. The rest of the family did not believe that he was Roger and traced his proper identity. He was brought to trial in 1871-1872 and found guilty. In 1874 he was sentence to 14 years penal servitude and died in 1884.
