    William H. Tinsley was 21 when he travelled from England to Sydney on the Cardigan Castle in 1883. Tinsley came from Warwick and his trade is identified as a gas fitter on the passenger lists.

    This diary describes his journey from Birmingham to Plymouth by train and then to Sydney in 1883 on the Cardigan Castle. It includes brief early impressions of life in Sydney and some of its inhabitants including Aborigines and Chinese workers.

    Name and address of Mr J. Tinsley, 39 Freeman Rd Nechells, Birmingham, England is on label pasted down on front cover. This diary was found in a box on a bomb site in Birmingham, UK during World War Two. A brief history of this diary and extracts can be found in 'Birmingham to Sydney on the Cardigan Castle, 1883', The Genealogist, Vol IX, no. 3, September 1998 and Vol. IX, no. 5, March 1999.
