  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

In 1878 William Henchman (1842-1906) and his wife Jane McIlwraith, née Wallace (1845-1923) emigrated to Australia from England. They had eight children: Mary (1866-1936), Elinor Agnes Muriel (1868-1892), Adela Mabel (1870-1943), William (1871-1871), John Evelyn Wallace (1872-1939), Hereward Humfry (1874-1939), Hubert James Hungerford (b. 1876) and Daphne Isald (1885-1970).

Hereward Humfry Henchman was admitted to practise as a barrister in Queensland in 1899, and at various times acted as a Judge of the District Court. He served with the A.I.F. from 1916, gained his lieutenant’s commission overseas, and returned to Australia in 1919. He was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1929. His brother, Hubert James Hungerford Henchman, was Crown Solicitor of Queensland, 1923-1937 and Solicitor-General, 1937.

Hereward Humfry Henchman married Theresa Francesca Goller (1874-1914) in Melbourne in 1903. In 1895 she had assisted Florence E. Green in founding the New England Girls’ School in Armidale, NSW. The Henchmans had two children: Hereward John Humfry (1904-1994) and Gwynneth Wallace (b. 1908).

Following the death of Theresa Francesca, Henchman married Edith Isobel Maud, née Holliday (1889-1953) in 1919. They had two sons: David Crosborough (b. 1920) and Adrian Peter Wyche (1927-1989). Adrian Peter Henchman was a senior partner of Allen, Allen and Hemsley, one of Australia’s oldest legal firms.

Born in Indooroopilly, Queensland, Hereward John Humfry Henchman attended the Church of England Grammar School, Brisbane and the Armidale School. He graduated BA, 1925, and LLB (Honours), 1928, from the University of Sydney. He was admitted to the NSW Bar in 1929 and maintained a busy practice in the Common Law and Admiralty jurisdictions. He was made a Queen’s Counsel in 1967. During World War II he was counsel for the Minister of State for the Army in appeal tribunals for interned aliens. He also represented the Attorney General in appeals relating to the Australia First Movement group.

In the 1960s Henchman was Counsel for the Royal Australian Navy in a number of cases, chiefly the two Royal Commissions held into the loss of the destroyer HMAS Voyager on 10 February 1964. He was appointed to the judiciary in August 1966 as an Acting Judge of the Supreme Court of NSW in the Divorce jurisdiction. In February 1968 he was appointed a Judge of all District Courts in NSW and Chairman of all Quarter Sessions. He retired on 24 July 1974. In 1982 Henchman wrote a supplement to H. T. E. Holt’s A Court Rises: The Lives and Times of the Judges of the District Court of New South Wales, extending the biographical coverage for the 77 judges in office from 1959 to 1982, including himself.

Henchman was actively involved in a number of community activities. He was Chancellor of the Diocese of Armidale, 1937-1982; a fellow of St Paul’s College, University of Sydney, from 1938 and Chairman of its Council, 1975-1980; a trustee of the Art Gallery of NSW, 1967-1974, and Vice-President and President of the Art Gallery Society, 1960-1977.

In 1934 Henchman married Nancy White (1910-2002), daughter of Wilfrid J. White, medical practitioner, and Roberta Olive Baxter. They had three children: Jennifer Anne, Peter Humfry and Theresa Gai.

In 1939 Gwynneth Wallace Henchman, married Lieutenant-Commander Varnum Cochran Southworth (1898-1943), a surgeon in the United States Navy Reserve, at St Stephen’s Church, Macquarie Street, Sydney. She worked for the English-Speaking Union in Washington DC from 1953-1982, resigning from the office of Executive Secretary to return to Australia. She was appointed MBE in 1969 for services rendered to Anglo-American relations.

  • General note

Further biographical note: Henchman corresponded with Henchman family members worldwide as part of his researches into Henchman genealogy. He was in regular contact with Robert Hinchman, Jr (1921-1996), of Dallas, Texas, founder and first President of the Hinchman Heritage Society. They confirmed that the Australian branch of the Henchman family has an established line to the Bishop of London, Humfry Henchman (1592-1675).
