    "Edward Eagar photo 1863, born 1785 died 1869, came to NSW 1810, left 1821, his son Geoffrey was Treasurer for N.S.W. 1868. Samuel Leigh spent his first night ashore at E.E's. home on 10 Aug. 1815 in O'Connell St. The next day they went to see Macquarie who requested Mr Eagar to show the 1st Methodist clergyman around the colony, which he did." -- in ink on the reverse

    "An enlargement of this photo in possession of the Eagar Family 1955 see 182/1955 has at back in the handwriting of Edward Eagar of Balaclava Road, great grandson of Ed. Eagar 1787-1866.
    'The small photo of which this is an enlargement had on the back in Edward Eagar's handwriting To my Affectionate son Geoffrey etat. [sic] 76, 24 December 1863'
