- ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
Giuseppe Anivitti was born in Rome in 1842, the eldest son of Luigi Anivitti and his wife Antonia, nee Ermini. He graduated in Philosophy and Law from the University of Rome, practiced as a solicitor and taught history at high school. He arrived in Sydney in the 1880s, and was among the first staff of Saint Patrick's Ecclesiastical College, Manly, in the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters. Giuseppe was naturalised in 1907. His brother, Giulio Anivitti (1851-1881), painter, preceded him to Australia in 1871. Giulio became the first instructor in painting and drawing at the Art Training School, created by the N.S.W. Academy of Art, Sydney, in 1875, and quickly established a reputation as an influential portrait painter. In 1877 Giulio married Ellen McGuigan and returned to Italy two years later, where he died in 1881. Ellen subsequently married Giulio's brother Giuseppe. - Scope and ContentThis collection includes pictorial material at P1/A and PXB 284
