  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Hugh Hamilton Newell was Commissioner for Main Roads from December 1932 until his sudden death on 15 March 1941. This is a collection of manuscripts, certificates, opening ribbons, photographs and letters, including bound books containing newspaper cutouts about Newell and his family and congratulatory telegrams on his appointments, first to the Main Roads Board, then as Commissioner and as a recipient of a CBE. Also bound books of sympathy and condolence cards and letters to his wife upon his death.

    1. Bound volume of congratulatory telegrams, letters, and clippings: Appointment as a member of the Main Roads Board, N.S.W. 11th February 1925-26th March 1925. Appointment as Deputy-president of the Main Roads Board, 4th January 1928; Various letters of appointment to boards, institutions, committees, associations and clubs, 1928-1930. Volume also contains some loose newspaper clippings.

    2. Miscelleanous papers, letters, newspaper clippings, 1932-1941. Journal articles on the Main Roads Department and A.D.B. entry for H.H. Newell. Includes notice from Buckingham Palace: "By command of His Majesty the King the accompanying Medal is forwarded to Mr. Hugh Hamilton Newell C.B.E. to be worn in commemoration of Their Majesties' Coronation 12th May, 1937."

    3. 6 volumes concerning the death of H.H. Newell. Each volume begins with, "Bound volume of tributes to the Late Mr. Hugh Hamilton Newell, C.B.E., MInst.C.E., MIEAust. Commissioner for Main Roads in the State of New South Wales".

    a. Contains sympathy and condolence cards. There is a 10 page list of the senders including, Floral tributes, Staff of the Department of Main Roads, Government Departments, Mosman Presbyterian Church, The Scots College, Representatives of Local Government Organisations, Representatives of societies, associations, etc., Representatives of banks, business houses, etc. March 1941

    b. Contains letters and telegrams received by Mrs. H. Newell on the death of her husband. Includes various Federal, State Government ministers and officers, societies, associations, business associates, from Australia and overseas. March 1941.

    c. Contains letters and telegrams received by Mrs. H. Newell on the death of her husband. Includes 5 page alphabetical list of Shire and Municipal Councils of N.S.W. March 1941.

    d. Contains 26 page list of names of those present at the funeral, and telegrams of condolence received. "List of those present at the funeral of the late Mr. H.H. Newell, C.B.E., Commissioner for Main Road. Service at the Mosman Presbyterian Church, Monday, 17th March, 1941, at 3.30 p.m. conducted by Rev. D.P. Macdonald."

    4. Bound letter-book volume of thank you letters sent from 24th June 1936-5th November 1936 by Hugh Newell on his award of the Commander of the British Empire (C.B.E.).

    g. Commissioner of Main Roads, 26th January 1940. Term of 7 years. With letter from the Minister for Transport, 5th February 1940.
