  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Alfred James Newton was a painter, decorator and gilder who migrated to Australia from England aboard the Commonwealth, arriving in 1877. In Sydney, he found work and became involved in the union movement, serving as president of the N.S.W. Painters' Union from 1903 to 1904.

    Newton kept in contact with his father, Robert Newton, and other family members in London. Following his death in 1908, his daughter Ellena Violet kept in contact with her family members in England especially her aunt Lucy Newton.

    Charles A Mason was a boilermaker from Lakemba, N.S.W. His daughter, Marie Ethne married Reginald W Newton in 1926.

  • Collection history
    Donald Newton, donor of this collection, was given the Newton family material by his aunt Ellena Violet Newton who inherited it from her father Alfred James Newton.
