  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Hans Bandler (1914-2009) was born in Vienna, Austria, to Elsa Blumenthal and Ludwig Bandler, but was largely raised by his aunt, Fritzi Blumenthal. He qualified as a mechanical engineer, but in 1938, after the Germans took over the company for which he worked, Bandler lost his job. His Jewish origins and political activism resulted in his incarceration in Dachau and then Buchenwald concentration camps. His aunt eventually secured his release in 1939 and he flew to London and then Australia, where he enrolled in a civil engineering diploma course at Sydney Technical College. He worked with the Hydro-Electricity Commission in Tasmania, the Sydney Water Board and as a senior design engineer on the Warragamba Dam. He took a postgraduate course in environmental studies at Macquarie University in 1973 and a Master of Science degree in 1978.
