Taylor and Challen Ltd was a prominent coining equipment manufacturer based in Birmingham. Both the Sydney and Melbourne Mints used Joseph Taylor (later Taylor and Challen) equipment.

In Spencer Book 1 (Dixson Library DLMSQ 205) there are handwritten notes pasted into front of book which state on the third page that the press was not listed by A. H. Spencer but was stored with Angus & Robertson Ltd and was taken into the Public Library on 23rd June 1954

Lever press with main body in tact. Surmounted by a cornice. Accompanied by twelve dismantled fixtures including one large and one small wheel

On long term loan to Historic Houses Trust. Currently on public dispay at The Mint, Macquarie Street, until 2014.

Below cornice at centre is a brass plate bearing the inscription 'Joseph Taylor. Constructor. Birmingham.'

Dated from the year tenders were received by the Royal Mint, Sydney, from Taylor and Challen.
