  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Stefania Siedlecky was born in 1921 in Blackheath, NSW. and became one of the first women doctors ever appointed to St Vincent's Hospital. She spent over thirty years in general and gynaecological medical practice in Blackheath and Sydney. She was also a gynaecologist at the Rachel Forster Hospital from 1960 - 1974.

    In 1971 Siedlecky started work with Family Planning New South Wales. During her time with Family Planning New South Wales, she helped to establish the Leichhardt Women's Health Centre, and in 1974 the Preterm Foundation. On her retirement in 1986 she returned to Family Planning as a volunteer Board Member, where she set up and the Ethics Committee which she went on to chair. In 1989 Siedlecky joined the Macquarie University Demography Research Group as an Honorary Associate in Demography where she continues to pursue her interest in epidemiological research.

    Over her career Siedlecky published a multitude of papers relating to women's health, contraception and world population issues. She was awarded AM, Member of the Order of Australia, in 1987.
