Paul Behrendt was born in Lithgow in 1939 and was placed in a home for children at the age of 5. He was finally reunited with his family in Coonamble in 1980, after searching State archives for family information. A recognised expert on the Kamilaroi language, history and culture, he recorded much of his knowledge for the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies in Canberra. He was involved in the early work of the Link-Up organisation, which helped reunite members of the Stolen Generations with their families and was the founding director of the University of NSW Aboriginal Research and Resource Centre.
