    Private Edwin John Martin, a journalist of Darlinghurst, Sydney was born in Kyneton, Victoria, and first enlisted with the 3rd Battalion at Liverpool, New South Wales on 2 July 1915, aged 39. He was discharged as medically unfit, 22 Oct. 1915. He enlisted again 22 May 1916, embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A11 Ascanius, 25 Oct. 1916 and served in France with the 56th Battalion, transferring to the 20th Battalion, 5th Brigade, 2nd Division, Mar. 1917. He was invalided to Australia on HT A35 Berrima, 31 Oct. 1917 and discharged as medically unfit, Mar. 1918
