  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Colonel Douglas Gray Marks, bank clerk of Neutral Bay, Sydney applied for a commission in the A.I.F. aged 19 years, 21 Nov. 1914. He embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board Transport A38 Ulysses, 22 December 1914 and commanded the 13th Battalion A.I.F. in action in Egypt, the Dardanelles and France. He was wounded in action at Gallipoli, 7 Aug. 1915 and in June 1916 he departed for France where he was wounded again, 11 Apr. 1917. After convalescence in England he departed for France, Aug. 1917. He returned to Australia on the Makura, Dec. 1918. He was awarded the White Eagle 5th Class and the Military Cross for services during the M.E.F. campaign, Sept.-Oct. 1916 and was awarded the DSO on 10 June 1918.

Ulysses 22 Dec. 1914-31 Jan. 1915, experiences in Egypt 1 Feb.-16 Apr. 1915, action in the Dardanelles 25 Apr.-31 Dec. 1915, return to Egypt 2 Jan. 1916, further service in Egypt 2 Jan.-2 June 1916 and trench warfare in France 7 June 1916-4 Oct. 1918
