James Stuart MacDonald, 1878-1952, artist and gallery director of Melbourne, Victoria, enlisted aged 36, 9 Sept. 1914 and embarked from Melbourne, Victoria with the 5th Battalion, on board Transport A3 Orvieto, 21 Oct. 1914. He was wounded at Gallipoli, 26 Apr. 1915 and in 1916 worked in Records, in the Army Pay Corps in England before being sent to France 14 June 1918 as a war artist. He returned to Australia on S.S. Makura, 21 Dec. 1918 - Scope and Content'Camouflaging in Picardy', letters to his wife describing his experiences as an artist in the ranks, the surrounding country, with stress on colour, the bombardments and camp life. He refers to other Australian artists doing similar work, including Frank Crozier, Alfred Henry Fullwood, Fred Leist and Louis McCubbin
