  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

In November 2008, Gordon Wood (b. 1962) was found guilty in the NSW Supreme Court of murdering his girlfriend, Caroline Byrne (1971-1995), by throwing her off The Gap at Watsons Bay on 7 June 1995.
In December he was sentenced to 17 years in jail. Justice Barr backdated Wood's sentence to include time spent in custody in the England, where he was arrested in 2006, and since he was taken into custody after the guilty verdict. His non-parole period was set at 13 years. Gordon Wood was acquitted of the conviction in February 2012.

The Crown prosecutor was Mark Tedeschi QC; Wood's barrister was Winston Terracini SC.
Kingston was motivated to create this piece by the experiences of his friend and fellow artist, John Doherty, who witnessed Byrne and a man during the evening of 7 June 1995.
Gordon Wood once asked journalist Paul Barry, after a televison interview, `So, do you think I did it?'
The work was displayed in the Australian Galleries, Paddington, in June 2004.
