    The medal was designed by William Wyon from an original model by his cousin Thomas Wyon, who had been appointed chief engraver to the London Royal Mint in 1815. The exact reasons behind the commissioning of this medal are not clear. The medal was minted at the Royal Mint in London in 1816.
