  • Signatures / Inscriptions

Signed 'H. Stuart - Wilson', at lower left undated, untitled. Dated and titled after comparison with H. Stuart-Wilson's 1897 portrait of 'Bogambil' or Joe Collins (P2/338), and the inscription in ink taped to the backing board of that work : 'Carrie Freeman/No.2/Study of an Aboriginal/at Brungle N.S.W./By H. Stuart-Wilson'.

Taped to the reverse side of the mount (now removed) of (P2/337) was a piece of brown paper, inscribed in ink, in the same hand as the inscription cited above, 'Aboriginal Study/Portrait of Joe Collins/of Brungla i.e. [Brungle] N.S.W./by H. St [torn]. This inscription, which is filed with (P2/337), appears to have been attached in error, when compared with (P2/338).
