Inscribed in ink, along lower edge of mount 'Taken with the microscopic apparatus of W.S. Macleay Esq. Presented by Capt. Ward R.[illegible]. The title is inscribed, in ink, on the mount, beneath the photograph.

The Capt. ward referred to was probably Sir Edward Wolstenholme Ward (Captain, 1852; Colonel, 1869), who was deputymaster of the Royal Mint in Sydney, 1855-1869, and an amateur photographer (Reference: Davies, Alan, The mechanical eye in Australia, Melbourne, 1985.

Undated. Approximately dated from the method of photography, in conjunction with the period from which known photographs by Captain Ward date, and the working period of Macleay's life.
