    Inscribed in ink, along lower edge of mount 'Taken with the microscopic apparatus of W.S. Macleay Esq. Presented by Capt. Ward R.[illegible]. The title is inscribed, in ink, on the mount, beneath the photograph.
  • Attributions / conjectures

    The Capt. ward referred to was probably Sir Edward Wolstenholme Ward (Captain, 1852; Colonel, 1869), who was deputymaster of the Royal Mint in Sydney, 1855-1869, and an amateur photographer (Reference: Davies, Alan, The mechanical eye in Australia, Melbourne, 1985.
