  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Oscar William Gillam served as a Sub-Lieutenant in the New South Wales Naval Force sent to the Boxer Rebellion conflict in China, embarking on the SS Salamis in August 1900 and returning to Australia in April 1901. In 1914, as a Lieutenant in the Royal Australian Naval Reserve, he took part in the capture of Bitapaka and Herbertshohe in New Britain, part of German New Guinea, subsequently serving as the King’s Harbour Master in Rabaul.

  • Scope and Content
    The collection comprises four photograph albums and two folders of loose papers, largely accumulated during Gillam’s naval service in the Boxer Rebellion campaign and throughout World War I in New Guinea and Australia.
